A word from our volunteer parents at Safety Valet.... We want to keep your children safe and have the most efficient drop off line possible. Please note the following information:
1. For families who need to park:
Please avoid driving on Herkimer Street altogether if you are not using the Safety Valet drop off line. We are trying to keep traffic in front of the school to a minimum.
Parking in the Blair's Restaurant parking lot is prohibited and it is illegal to park in the two alleys that run off Herkimer. (Parking on Avenel Terrace is legal since it's officially designated a street rather than an alley.
The best places to look for parking are on the surrounding side streets and on Waverly Drive. Please be respectful of our neighbors and do not park in illegal areas or block driveways. The City does come around and ticket periodically.
2. Pedestrians:
Please cross Herkimer ONLY at the two official intersections (Rowena at the bottom and Waverly at the top).
Please do not cross Herkimer from the alleys or anywhere else in the middle of the street. The alley across from the school is NOT a legal pedestrian crossing and it is dangerous to have people walking through the valet line.
3. Drivers, when using the Safety Valet Line:
Please let children out of the car only when you have reached a Valet. If you let them jump out early it slows down the flow of the line and distracts the Valets.
Please drive all the way through the Safety Valet lane and exit at the top. Please do not pull out of the lane early and enter the oncoming traffic lane to your left. We have seen many near collisions this year due to cars suddenly pulling out of the line and heading up the other side of the street.
Please enter the line from ROWENA via a RIGHT turn. We are trying to create a one way circular flow of traffic around the school. It is worth it to drive a little further to get onto Rowena heading the right direction. If you try to turn LEFT into the line from Rowena, you will have a long wait at the intersection anyway.

Please DO NOT try to enter the line by turning left onto Herkimer from the alley across the street. This is distracting for the Valets and particularly dangerous when there are pedestrians around. Please ask your children to have their backpacks and other belongings ready so we can get them out of the car quickly and keep the line moving. If possible, it is helpful if they are sitting on the right side of the car for a quick exit. |
